ABOUT THIS SESSION

Title: Additive Manufacturing and the U.S. Space Industry: Where We are Headed Next

Description:

Driven by the National Center for Defense Manufacturing and Machining (NCDMM), America Makes is a Department of Defense Manufacturing Innovation Institute focused on additive manufacturing (AM) technologies.  Since its inception, America Makes has leveraged a national collaborative ecosystem to advance the readiness level of AM technologies and invigorate the knowledge base, skills, and training available for the domestic AM supply chain.  Our strategy is the product of collaboration with our membership, which is comprised of representation from all tiers of the domestic AM supply chain. Additive manufacturing (AM) technologies for space propulsion applications continue to mature and offer a range of performance, cost, and lead time benefits. In January of 2023, America Makes convened approximately 70 organizations from domestic AM supply chain including NASA, AFRL, MDA, DOE, DoD, industry, academia, and non-profit organizations to discuss strategic development opportunities for AM propulsion.  Participants were asked to identify time-phased milestones and objectives to deliver a sector specific roadmap for air breathing, liquid fuel, and nuclear space propulsion applications.   An overview of the workshopping approach, observations, findings, and strategic development opportunities will be presented.
